After some frustrations with the racing drone frames that were available in early-mid 2019, I decided I wanted to create my own signature frame that would be more durable while maintaining a super light weight. I had experience designing my own frames in the past, but I also knew that by enlisting the help of my friend and fellow pilot, Cory Ibanez, we would be able to create something better than either one of us solo.
I spent many nights over the span of a few months on call with Cory, sharing our screens and working in Onshape to create the design for the frame.
We figured out an interlocking arm system that allowed quick arm changes but braced each pair of arms on what we call a 'spine' piece. This technique (or similar) is now common, but was not at the time.
I ordered prototypes and decided I would use them at the upcoming national championship.
We found a couple weak areas that needs some material added, but overall the design was very solid. We made the adjustments and I ordered a production batch that I sold on my own site and to retailers. For finishing touches I also included custom die-cut rubber battery pads and custom battery straps in each kit.
